Just stumbled upon this randomly... great post and I like the focus on non-profit. I had a similar experience when I took marketing. My hopes to build strategies for businesses always seemed overshadowed by others' dreams of i-banking!

Just wrote a post about how Gen Y can save the economy... check it out if you get time!

@Ralph: Thanks for stopping by! We'll definitely talk more.

@Raven: Yes! We need to find ways to incorporate financial skills into how we raise and manage money. I get the impression that larger more established non-profits do this, but mainly with older financial professionals. Why not have training or mentoring programs with these professionals? Or work closely with business schools focusing on non-profit business models?

And that's a great question--what are business schools doing? How is this crisis going to be described in the textbooks and how are we being prepped to handle it?

A wonderful post. I especially enjoyed your commentary on how Gen Y-ers should get involved in the public sector. The financial crisis has cast a blight on the non profit community, especially their endowments. Shrinking endowments can lead to cutting operational costs (which means less jobs!). If anything, talented professionals hit hard by the bankruptcies, mergers and buyouts should definitely take their talents and help non profits develop better financial portfolios that support their programs. If anything, I wonder how business school admissions might be affected by the current crisis.

Hey, this is Ralph Alexis from the MAST program!! :-D

I just haphazardly found your blog and really find it extremely informative. Since, i was thinking of becoming an I-banker i really thought it was all about the money. But, you proved me wrong. Hope you can give more advice like this one for an high school student who just has no idea what to major in!
Lets talk more on FB!

all the best, Ralph
